A cheeky teen leaned in with his mobile phone as she passed him in St George’s indoor market, Belfast, giving what looked like a hint of a smile.
The Monarch and Prince Philip had been touring the notorious Troubles prison alongside Martin McGuinness and Peter Robinson – who were both held there during the conflict.
Standing side by side with Northern Ireland’s premiers, the royals toured the once terrifying Crumlin Road Gaol which is now a popular visitor attraction.
Dressed in a yellow dress and hat by Angela Kelly, the Queen’s bright outfit symbolised the country’s future as she wandered round the once occupied prison cells on the second day of her three-day visit to Northern Ireland.
Sinn Fein veteran and former IRA commander Mr McGuinness was held in the prison for over a month in 1976 and Democratic Unionist leader Mr Robinson was detained on a number of occasions during the 1980s.
Later in the day the Queen gave a speech at Belfast City Hall where she said Northern Ireland had turned “the impossible into the possible”.
